Flower provision reduces intraguild predation between predators and increases aphid biocontrol in tomato

چکیده

Intraguild predation (IGP)–the of a natural enemy species upon another one sharing prey species–is relatively frequent in both and agroecosystems. This may reduce pest control the establishment predator populations during mass release biological agents or multi-predator systems due to increased mortality predators. IGP is exacerbated isolated space-limited such as greenhouses, reduced food resources movement. Therefore, adding an alternative main prey, floral resources, could between enemies these systems. In present study we investigated role supplemental help intra- interspecific involving Harmonia axyridis Propylea japonica (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) laboratory conditions, tested its application greenhouse setup. We found significant reduction conditions when were abundant. At scale, abundances ladybird abundant, potentially through combination enhanced fertility IGP. resulted aphid on tomato crops. Our demonstrates that companion plants greenhouses can improve with multi-species agent releases.

Generalist predators disrupt parasitoid aphid control by direct and coincidental intraguild predation.

Generalist predators and parasitoids are considered to be important regulators of aphids. The former not only feed on these pests, but might also consume parasitoids at all stages of development. This direct or coincidental interference affects the natural control of aphids, the scale of which is largely unknown, and it has rarely been examined under natural conditions. Here, molecular diagnost...

Intraguild Predation Responses in Two Aphidophagous Coccinellids Identify Differences among Juvenile Stages and Aphid Densities

(1) Intraguild predation (IGP) can occur among aphidophagous predators thus reducing their effectiveness in controlling crop pests. Among ladybirds, Coccinella septempunctata L. and Hippodamia variegata Goeze are the most effective predators upon Aphis gossypii Glov., which is an economically important pest of melon. Understanding their likelihood to engage in reciprocal predation is a key poin...

Predators, parasitoids, and pathogens: a cross-cutting examination of intraguild predation theory.

Although the canonical concept of intraguild predation evokes images of predators and prey, several subdisciplines within ecology have developed theory not specifically framed in terms of predation and competition and often using system-specific terminology, yet functionally quite similar. Here, we formulate models combining exploitation and competition in predator-prey, host-parasitoid, and ho...

Biological Invasion and Coexistence in Intraguild Predation

Invasion of an exotic species initiated by its local introduction is considered subject to intraguild predation (IGP). Mathematically, the system dynamics is described by three nonlinear diffusion-reaction equations in two spatial dimensions. The key factors that determine successful invasion are investigated bymeans of extensive numerical simulations. The results reveal high asymmetry. An exoti...

Biological control of toxic cyanobacteria by mixotrophic predators: an experimental test of intraguild predation theory.

Intraguild predators both feed on and compete with their intraguild prey. In theory, intraguild predators can therefore be very effective as biological control agents of intraguild prey species, especially in productive environments. We investigated this hypothesis using the mixotrophic chrysophyte Ochromonas as intraguild predator and the harmful cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa as its pr...
